Hell About to Freeze Over!

Seriously, hell must be about to freeze over if this is accurate:

Conyers suggests probe of ACORN

In an startling partisan shift, House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers Jr. on Thursday proposed holding hearings on claims the liberal activist group ACORN engaged in a pattern of crimes ranging from voter fraud to a mob-style “protection” racket.

Mr. Conyers, Michigan Democrat and fierce partisan, suggested a congressional probe after scathing testimony about the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) during a hearing on various voting issues related to the 2008 presidential election.

Mr. Conyers called the accusations “a pretty serious matter.”

“I think that it would be something that would be worth our time,” he said during Thursday's hearing. “We've never had one person representing ACORN before the committee. ... I think in all fairness we ought to really examine it.”

The testimony by Pittsburgh lawyer Heather Heidelbaugh accused the nonprofit group of violating tax, campaign-finance and other laws by, among other things, sharing with the Barack Obama campaign a list of the Democrat's maxed-out campaign donors so ACORN could use it to solicit them for a get-out-the-vote drive.

She also testified that the Democrat-allied group provided liberal causes with protest-for-hire services and coerced donations from targets of demonstrations through a shakedown it called the “muscle for the money” program.

Ms. Heidelbaugh, a member of the executive committee of the Republican National Lawyers Association, spearheaded an unsuccessful lawsuit last year seeking a court injunction in Pennsylvania against ACORN's voter-registration drive for the 2008 presidential campaign. She appeared as a witness at the request of Republican committee members.

I will be writing my "representatives" in Congress to encourage this idea (they are all Democrocks so I won't be holding my breath anticipating a positive response.) Not that I think hearings will happen but if we're getting global cooling here, hell may be getting colder too.

It's a ruse. They hold the hearings, discover that the "crimes" were commited by individuals acting on their own, not directed by ACORN policy. Presto chango, ACORN is absolved of all responsibility, found to be "non-partisan" and helps Commerce conduct the 2010 census. The Democrats will only hold hearings or haul someone before a committe if it is in their best interests.

While I harbor no illusions about this, in general the more scrutiny of ACORN, the better. Besides, if there are hearings, there is always a chance that someone may blurt out the truth accidentally or inadvertently open a can of worms that ignites a firestorm. Think back to Alexander Butterfield's stunning revelation of the White House taping system in the 1973 Watergate Hearings. If that hadn't come out, Nixon likely would have been able to survive to the end of his term. I'm not saying something similar would happen in this instance, I'm just suggesting that the odds are better when people start babbling in front of a microphone.

That could happen but it won't get any play in the MSM or they will give it a "nuanced" explanation. Coverage over the weekend of protesters at the homes of AIG exec's didn't mention that they were union workers, just angry citizens.

I see that, but here is the kicker, when enough people (individuals) are registered with ACORN and are committing crimes i.e. voter fraud, that calls for concern amongst the public, or at least the conservative public. Democrats, though have called this hearing, will probably find some legal loophole to exploit.

I've followed Conyers for years. If he's interested in ACORN it's most certainly not because they're wicked. He'd french-kiss Atilla the Hun for votes. It could be a tactic to wash them, but I wonder if they didn't bow deeply enough to Conyers and this is some sort of payback.

Or I wonder if it's a shakedown of ACORN. After all, how many billion are they getting?

Aint nothing greater than Tony Romo and others of the Cowboys being registered to vote inother states... Maybe that blue star on the helmet shuold be red. We Texicans are truly progressive.

User avatar
Comrades, relax. Tis but a show trial. Except in this case, the innocence of the accused is not in doubt. What do the silly American's call it?... A White wash!

User avatar
The Secretary of State of Nevada found that ACORN had registered all of the Cowboys.

And I love the SOS of Missouri--the woman who said, "Pick up people at bus stops and shelters and vote them. Period."

What a Progressive. Perhaps the most important duty that a SOS has is running elections. And this completely abrogation of her responsibility means that she has a firm future in running the USSA or your neighborhood police state.

It seems the bus that carried a load of people that went to Connecticut to protest the AIG execs was leased by ACORN.

And a former ACORN employee has testified that some services union, yeah, the one that put polls in the casinos giving his O'liness the primary, hires folks to protest.

I wonder, no way, surely they didn't cart a busload of hired protesters to Connecticut!

A growth industry for unemployed Canadians is, I'm told, protesting for hire in America.

Commissar, an interesting idea. I read earlier today that the Senate has postponed voting on the AIG bonus clawback tax until late next month; or, as the blogger put it, they are putting it off hoping that the national short attention span will forget about it by then and they can quietly let the issue die. Not in order to avoid setting bad legal precedents or anything like that, mind you, but because they will be wanting campaign contributions from these people in the near future.

So how can we interpret Conyers' statement in this context? Maybe, as you suggest, this was a shot across ACORN's bow, a way to remind them not to forget their sugar daddy helped them get their booty and can easily find a way to "claw" it back. Or, perhaps Ms. Heidelbaugh's testimony caught him off guard and he couldn't just blow it off without looking like a partisan hack. Another possibility is that Obama has pissed him off and Conyers wants to remind Obama he can make things warmer than the White House thermostat can.

I read on another blog that at least one state investigation of ACORN is still ongoing:
Investigation of ACORN has not been 'brushed aside,' Sheriff's Office says
Monday, March 23, 2009

Whatever happened to the investigation of ACORN, the community group suspected of fraudulent voter registration practices in Cuyahoga County before the November presidential election?

After five months, detectives with the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Office are still gathering and reviewing evidence for the "ongoing" investigation.

Cuyahoga County was one of several places around the country where ACORN's voter registration cards were questioned before the election. National media attention ensued when John McCain and the Republican Party attempted to link opponent Barack Obama to ACORN and election fraud.

But the spotlight on ACORN disappeared after President Obama's victory.

Chief Doug Burkhart said three Cuyahoga sheriff's detectives and a supervisor remain committed to the case here. They must review more than 70,000 voter registration cards the group turned in to the Board of Elections.

"It is not being brushed aside by any means," Burkhart said. "We're taking it very seriously."

The inquiry started when workers at the Board of Elections flagged dozens of registration cards ACORN turned in. The group paid workers hourly wages to sign up unregistered, low- and moderate-income people.

They were encouraged to meet a quota of voters to register.

Election workers found cards with identical names and different addresses; or identical names and different birth dates. They suspected ACORN workers shared information and altered it slightly to meet their quotas.

The Board of Elections called for a hearing and subpoenaed people who signed multiple cards. One witness, who was homeless when he signed the cards, said he wanted to help ACORN workers keep their jobs.

Maybe Conyers is doing a CYA in case one of the state cases gets legs and results in prosecutions. Given the ease with which Obama throws folks under the bus, he really shouldn't expect anyone to stand behind him when the tire is on the other wheel.

Regardless of his motive, it is a tactic that could backfire. It's happened to better people than him. Let's hope it does.

Of course, we're all overlooking the possibility that Conyers really cares about the rule of law and honest elections and such. Stop laughing.

I soiled myself. Shame on you.

There's another possibility. Conyers et al have been having a high old time as being the prominent black politicians in America. Obama is stealing their thunder. The only good thing that I see about the elevation of His O'liness is the agony that it is causing Jesse Jackson, who has been thrown into the shadow. Of course his scandals didn't help him but even if he didn't have a zipper problem and even if he didn't make millions disappear in his foundations, he'd still hate it. To go from America's premier shake-down artist and just because of his color to the complete shadow because a black man actually made it to the Oval Office.

Conyers et al don't like it either. These are people who have traded in being frightening, working the racial grievances angle, and I'm convinced that The O'llow man made it there because he's the first black Democrat who didn't scare white people with his anger.

Obama marginalized the Black Caucus in ways that no white president could. And so I wouldn't be at all surprised to find them disliking him in secret.

I still love the image of Jackson crying... not because of the historic nature of The One, but rather because he knew it wasn't him and in fact never would be.

User avatar
Ah yes. Crying in his beer. Where's Jackson's presidency? Amber alert!

User avatar
Well, that's what happens when you say you don't like the Jews, and record will show they vote democratic.

Which brings me to my next point, why would you insult a block of voter who would vote for you?! I can understand him saying he wouldn't like Republicans, or even military people, or Luthrens (strong republicans there), but the Jewish?

Talk about a faux pas

The congressman from the great gulag of Michigan is freakin' 80 years old and goes off like a firecracker!... Come on..elected 22 times...now there's some real change to believe in. LOL Only his former mentor, John Dingal has served longer in the House.

Now doesn't that explain alot? The congressman is suffering from dementia. I will give him credit for marrying a younger, ambitious woman, Monica, who is President of the Detroit City Council and under investigation for political corruption. Imagine that!

[ off ]And I believe that Maxine Waters, who is on Banking, has a relative who is involved at a high level with one of the banks which got billions of OPM. Dick Morris thinks that Obama's call to work with people to do private and public charities is just a sham, since SOBama wants to tax charitable deductions for people making over $250K (who give a LOT) at 28%. Making Uncle Sam the source of all charity. And if he can nationalize the banks (good start) and health care, he will have done more damage than any other American.

Not to mention telling President Ahamafuckingjerk of Iran that he can roll over us.

Good points. I wonder also if there is not a reservoir of resentment amongst the non-black veterans in the House and Senate. There are folks who have "served" in those offices for many years (Byrd has been a Senator since before I was born) and along comes this Obama joker who's not in the Senate long enough to learn the location of the men's room and all of a sudden he's president. And what has to be more galling is they know he doesn't deserve it. Whatever else they are, they aren't all stupid and they know he's unqualified and it's becoming obvious he's in over his head. The Democrat side had to support him because it was political suicide not to (ask Gerry Ferraro) but a lot of them have to be pissed about his election, whether they thought they themselves had a chance for the Presidency or not. I gotta think that if Obama keeps sinking, they are going to be quick to turn on him. Not just out of concern for the country and to save own phoney-baloney jobs, but out of jealousy and revenge. They will wait to see how to public takes it; as long as Obama remains popular with the public, he's safe. But if the majority of the public starts to turn on him, these people will jump out in front of the mob just like they did with the AIG bonus fiasco. Shakespeare wrote "Julius Ceasar" 400 years ago but people haven't changed much in that time.
