A Transportation Security Administration agent was killed and several more people wounded when a gunman opened fire on Friday morning at Los Angeles International Airport.

Suspect Apprehended

The FBI has identified the shooting suspect as 23-year-old Paul Ciancia. According to law enforcement officials, Ciancia was apprehended on the scene after opening fire at an airport security checkpoint. He reportedly suffered a non-lethal gunshot wound and is being treated in a local hospital.

Personal details about Ciancia are still emerging. According to public records obtained by Yahoo News, Ciancia has a known address in Pennsville, N.J., about 15 miles from Wilmington, Del. The AP said Ciancia had contacted his brother by text message on Friday saying he was considering suicide. Additional reports indicate when Ciancia was detained by law enforcement he was carrying literature critical of the federal government and the TSA. Ciancia's father reached out to law enforcement officials in New Jersey who subsequently reached out to their counterparts in Los Angeles. Police in Los Angeles reportedly made an unsuccessful attempt to make contact with Ciancia before the shooting took place.

Ciancia entered LAX on Friday wearing fatigues and carrying a bag containing a handwritten note that said he "wanted to kill TSA and pigs," an official, who was briefed on the investigation and requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly, told the AP.

TSA Casualties

The TSA confirmed the death of the officer in a statement obtained by Yahoo News: "Earlier this morning, a shooting occurred at Terminal 3 at Los Angeles International Airport. Multiple Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) were shot, one fatally. Additional details will be addressed by the FBI and local law enforcement who are investigating the shooting."

A spokesperson for the American Federation of Government Employees told Yahoo News that it is the first time a TSA officer has been killed in the line of duty. According to the spokesperson, the TSA officer was a "behavior detection officer" who was charged with spotting suspicious behavior in the airport.

LAX airport police Chief Patrick Gannon said at a press conference that police tracked the suspect "through the airport and engaged him in gunfire in Terminal 3" and were able to take him into custody.

New ‘Enhanced Security Measures' unveiled

In the wake of this tragic incident, TSA Senior Spokesperson, Ben Dover unveiled an entire new list of Enhanced Security Measures in an official press conference held last this afternoon as details of the LAX Man-Caused Disaster began to trickle in:

“We are shocked and amazed that ANYONE would harbor such violent thoughts towards diligent, hardworking Patriots who work at TSA Security Checkpoints. These are the very people we trust to grope average air travelers and leer at their nude images on a day-to-day basis in hopes of preventing such violence on airliners.

“Now that this Right-Wing Extremist violence – no doubt a carryover from the Republican-led shut down of vital government operations -- has spilled out into our Airport Terminals, we at the TSA are announcing new, enhanced security measures that will incorporate additional layers of safety for the good of the public.”

Effective immediately, the TSA will randomly select passengers for full body cavity searches. Initially, these searches must occur in full view of the public, until privacy booths can be constructed. Random travelers shall be selected based on the judgment of the full body x-ray scanner technicians. The public may still opt for the alternative ‘pat down' searches, but those selecting this alternative will hereafter be regarded as exhibiting ‘suspicious behavior.'”

“Additionally, any prospective passengers exhibiting ‘suspicious behavior' may be shot on site by local law enforcement agents or National Guard soldiers at the discretion of TSA Behavior Detection Officers. Given thought our first TSA loss was a Behavior Detection Officer, we expect those remaining will be more keen and alert to ‘suspicious behavior' in the future.” Dover continued.

Dover added: “We will further add layers to the security onion by establishing TSA Pre-Screening Check Points outside the Departure Lobbies of all US Airports. Passengers will have to provide five forms of official identification and an officially-issued airlines boarding pass prior to entering the Airlines Check-In Desk area. Travelers will be subject to intense interrogation techniques and have their stories thoroughly checked by TSA Background Investigators before they may be allowed inside the Departures Lobby.

Dover concluded his remarks: “We trust the traveling public will understand these reasonable measures are designed for the safety of TSA Officers and the public in general. We recommend that passengers should arrive at their airport three to five days prior to their departure in order to ensure they are timely processed before their flights are scheduled to depart.”

It is good to see you again, comrade Raum, and right on top of the news with the korrekt perspective. There's no doubt in my mind whatsoever (and according to such reliable sources as Yahoo news) that this gunman is the embodiment of caricatures created by such notables as Chris "Fritz" Mattspews, Andrea Minstrel, Jon Stalwartz and Rev. Al "not so" Sharpton. We already know everything there is about this TEA-rrorist without even having to investigate. CNN/MSBSNBC have already tried and sentenced this gunman as a Bush-bot, a rethuglikkkan sympathizer and a Tea Party rightwing racist extremist who hates gay people.

A leftwing liberal democrat-votin' O-bot zombie would never ever be capable of this level of madness!

Yes, Comrade Sugar Daddy, a lot of our brightest pundits are wondering if the seething hate against TSA workers was the result of Government Shutdown, lack of Gun Free Zone signs, Bush's Tax cut for the wealthiest or the Republican's War on Women for desensitizing Americans to violence. While it's certainly not a culture that lost a moral common sense compass or values insanity for political purposes, but just may be the failure of the Supreme Court to end the Second Amendment or even end the Gun Loophole. Perhaps a constant drone of talking points will provoke the final wake up call to demand the complete destruction of the NRA or any political organization that continues to defend the Bill of Rights or any other old meaningless document that does not support gay sex, abortion rights and the irrational support of the second amendment. I'm sure if a new ban was put into effect the amount of people murdered by sane law abiding citizens would drop drastically and we could continue to have meaningful body cavity searches.

What did this fellow have against Friday morning?

User avatar
Fear not, comrade squirrel. The Boomtown Rats are currently working on a song, "I Don't Like Fridays" as an introspection on the event.

Friday mornings aren't for the entitlement mentality.
8 more hours to go is simply hate talk.

Beware Comrades!
You never know what is going to set these "people" off.

Yes indeed. It will be soothing to listen to "hold" music while shooter is shooting.[/center]

SD Bear...

Thank you for your kind welcome. upon my return. (your singular act of party loyalty -- with regard to the apparent, and selfish lack thereof from others -- is duly noted).

Please excuse my protracted absence.... I found myself in deep mourning of the Great Prog Theocritus which began in the weeks prior to his 'disappearance' (coincidentally around the same time his name moved up on Dear Reader's (AP&PBUH) "Not-So-Friendly 'Friends' List".

Its was a great regret to ensure witness hear of his passing. It was Theocritus who named yours truly a "Made Prog." (although we are quietly reviewing the records to ensure that his recent inner party activities are not assigned to me as "incriminating"...as it were. I should not elaborate).

It was indeed a auspicious honour to betray him in a most inculpative manner vaguely rivaling many of his "golden 'hits'" Theo would have wanted it that way.

The recent tragedy at LAX stoked the Great Patriotic fervor within my breast and compelled me to depart from my deep bereavemental languishing and get on with the task at hand.

It is good to see that these ladies are hung. One would expect no less in the glorious forward-thinking state of People's California. This privilege has been too long accorded only to chauvinistic retro-thinking males.

Shouldn't the agency name be updated to the LBGTSA to reflect its Forward! posture?

Is it true Mr. Ciancia was heard yelling "You've taken your last tube of toothpaste from me"?

Comrade Raum,You are most welcome. I believe we all mourned over the great loss of Father Prog (myself more equally than most). He was, indeed, a guiding light to Made Progdom; a mentor, teacher, and Grand Impaler. Father Prog "made" you a Made Prog; that's what he does and so rests his legacy. Yes, the LAX 'tragedy' did stoke a lot of things. Mainly the ire of those who had to stand outside the airport for over 6 hours not having any access to water or restrooms.

Denying access to such facilities would appear to be latest government "persuader" device to demonstrate power of State to care for citizens. Recall tourists who were removed from Yellowstone Park in 2.5 hour bus convoy that did not allow stops for bladder relief.

Only when State removes essentials do peoples learn to appreciate what State normally allows to those who are good and obedient servants campaign donors citizens. Soon this reminder will be applied to other areas on a repeated basis: electricity, water, fuel, air, walking permits, etc.

This notion of "removal" to punish can also work in reverse - when the State "refuses removal" of your diseased bladder due to age or lack of funds.
