One of them is a surreal bundle of human hands trying to reach Obama. That reminded me of a bizarre Soviet propaganda poster with a collage of outstretched hands and the slogan saying "We will meet the plan of glorious projects!" BEIJING – Public restrooms in Beijing must contain no more than two flies per stall, according to a bizarre new directive issued to washroom attendants. The Beijing Municipal Commission of City Administration and Environment issued the rule Monday as a "new standard for public toilet management," the Beijing News reported. Xie Guomin, the official in charge of the initiative, told the newspaper that the two-fly rule was not compulsory, but was a new benchmark to improve the Chinese capital's notoriously unpleasant public restrooms. The keynote of the address centered on the dark specter of George W. Bush that still hangs over the nation. “I don’t know how they’ve been bamboozling folks into thinking that they are the responsible, fiscally-disciplined party. They run up these wild debts and then when we take over we have to clean it up,” the President thundered in righteous rage. He called to disregard the rumors that had surrounded the 2008 election, sometimes cited in the Bush-controlled media as a landslide Democratic victory. The current truth is that "People don’t remember last election was close. The President is definitely on a roll and is racking up votes faster than George Bush has been driving up the national debt since he left office. If this juggernaut continues, there will be no votes left for anyone else! What is especially interesting to me is that the president's putative "opponent", Mitchell Romney, does not seem to be getting any votes at all! Nada! None! Zilch! He couldn't even muster enough votes to finish ahead of Mr. Uncommitted, let alone the president. Romney must already be so far behind that he has no hope of catching up. I don't understand why he just doesn't give up already. Can't he see it's hopeless and no one wants him to cut their hair, let alone be chief barber? I mean, is it just me or is this Romney guy hopelessly stupid? Maybe he just made so much money closing plants and firing workers that he wants to spend some travelling around the country making speeches and asking for votes he's not going to receive? The long-awaited Progressive World of Next Tuesday has just gotten closer with the passage of an amendment in Congress that legalizes government propaganda. What could possibly go wrong with that? It worked so well in the USSR! Drawing simplified, two-dimensional people on a propaganda poster is the same as flattening individuals under an ideological press, squeezing out and discarding their humanity and leaving some single common trait - class, gender, race, profession, ethnicity - in order to establish a simplified, two-dimensional vision of the world in the minds of target audiences. Complex, multi-dimensional ideas are not likely to spur large groups of perfect strangers to unite in a swift, coordinated action. That can only be accomplished with a simplified message that isolates a single common characteristic in different people and exaggerates it to the point of existential importance, while suppressing more essential individual characteristics. As the secondary characteristics become primary and vice versa - voila - the individual is being sacrificed to the collective. As an added benefit, this amendment will feed all the progressive artists congregating at the NEA trough. It just so happens that, as a former Soviet citizen, I used to create motivational visual agitation posters for the Communist Party committee in Siberia. May I apply for a grant? Here, I just created a few posters on speck. Let's see if the American public is down with such a self-image.
