Obama's media to Romney: You lost, now play our game or else
WASHINGTON, December 11, 2012 – The game Obama and the compliant mass media are playing have many rules: some are fixed, some are flexible, but most of them remain unspoken. Let's try to capture and describe a few.
When socialist policies bring the economy to a near collapse, using a bit of capitalism to revive it may be permissible, as long as you don't use the “c” word. Unwilling to see their country suffer, the capitalists will cooperate; they always do. The prospects of being dragged through the mud by the compliant “mainstream” media should they refuse is another incentive that yields results.
Three weeks after having won the presidential race by discrediting his opponent's free-market ideas, Obama invited Mitt Romney for a private meeting over white turkey chili and Southwestern grilled chicken salad. At the same time, someone started rumors that Romney was being offered a cabinet position - possibly, Secretary of Business.
The meeting was closed to the reporters and we may never know what happened, but it wouldn't be a surprise if the Campaigner-in-Chief had been planning to use Romney's business expertise in cleaning up his mess and boosting the credibility of his own governing style.
As a bonus, Romney could be blamed for every economic failure past or present, replacing George Bush as the whipping boy since blaming Bush is getting old. Obama would then take the podium, look thoughtfully at his teleprompter, and declare the verdict: “I kept an open mind. I gave capitalism another chance. It didn't work. No more experimenting with the failed past. From now on, we'll use the stable and well-tested model of central planning.”
Instead, Romney chose to go back to the corporate world, rejoining the board of directors of Marriott International Inc. - a move that the Obama-media functionary Dana Milbank denounced as selfish, callous, tone-deaf, and unpatriotic.
“The country is in a crisis, political leaders in a standoff, and Romney is joining his buddy's corporate board,” he complains in his Washington Post column, calling Romney “small” for choosing to generate wealth instead of helping Obama waste it.
Composing a list of manipulative suggestions for Romney, Milbank unwittingly reveals the game's unspoken rules.
First of all, start a charity, which, like most charities, will be overtaken by the Professional Left and used to enforce the Progressive Narrative, along the lines of what Bill Ayers and Obama did with the $100 million of Annenberg's money in Chicago. Or, like many other clueless capitalists of yore, give money to one of the already subverted charities, to be channeled to radical anti-capitalist causes.
Next, help Obama to unite the nation into one homogenous mass of compliant, unanimous subjects, or at least rally your own Republican Party behind Obama by demonizing and purging the non-compliant. Make them accept him as their only rightful leader.
Admit that working for individual profit is a reprehensible behavior and devote your life to selfless service for the common good, with Obama and other gamers standing on the receiving end of your sacrifice. Let your work and talent be stolen, and hail the thief when he says, “you didn't build that.” Rush to the nation's rescue by letting Obama take credit for your ideas, which he had publicly ridiculed and rejected so that he could stay in power.
Don't just pay millions in taxes - you must also assist Obama in spending your and other people's money on one or another impractical but politically useful, self-aggrandizing scheme. Don't just abandon your beliefs - help the new country's owners destroy everything you believed in and fully cooperate in establishing a new, progressive belief system.
Because if you don't, the words on your tombstone may well be “selfish, callous, tone-deaf, and unpatriotic,” since the nation will only remember you by the things that the compliant mass media allows them to remember.
These are the rules. They are never explicitly stated, and neither are the ultimate goals, which will have to remain vague until a time when American voters will no longer squirm at the word “socialism.” When that time arrives, expect today's vague apologists to become ruthless enforcers.
