Red Square wrote:I learned today that Anna could be popping up to 70 pills a day to maintain that level of high she was known for. Does this make her Sister Massively Opiated's sister?
Not in the least... 70 pills is not a measure of anything... could be Midol... could be asprin... could be 120 mg MS Contin (time release morphine)... then, what is dosage?... Statex (full release morphine) comes in 5 and 10 mg pills... MS Contin (also called Ratio-Morph) comes in 15, 30, 60 and 120 mg pills - maybe also 160, but I have never had these... Ditto Valium.. could be 1 mg, 2 mg... 5... 10... all different dosages designated by different pretty colours... and that is only morphine and diazepams... Don't even get me started on the other benzodiazapenes such as Ativan or Klonazapam... or the other opiate-based such as codeine formulations (some OTC in Canada, others by Rx only), the Oxys which can be the Percs... such as Percodan or Percocet which is OxyCodone - full release, or OxyContin, which is the time-release version and the abuse of choice after Hydrocodone (Vicodin)... Bizarrely, in Kanadistan where morphine is available, OxyContin is still abused more regularly and is actually more addictive, despite the fact that the Oxys are derived from Thebaine - a lesser part of opium, rather than morphine which is derived from a more potent component of opium. Hydrocodone is not much used here, as we prefer to actually treat pain with more effective and less addictive formulations (ie. morphine)... The reason the Oxys and particularly OxyContin - the time release version - is more addictive is that unlike morphine, Oxys work partly by disassociation. Rather than act on the central nervous system in a way that blocks pain, they act in a way that, for lack of a better explanation, makes you care less about experiencing it... It certainly lessens the experience of pain, but Oxy acts on both nociception - the signals that communicate pain in the nervouse system - as well as the emotional component of pain, which is very often a strong component of people's experience of pain. And because it can make you not care about physical pain it can also make you not care about emotional issues as well.
The second problem is that with the Oxys, there is often a period of depression or black moods associated with it wearing off. And so, if you are someone who is not only in pain, but also has emotional problems, it is a very attractive drug because it give pain relief in the physical sense, as well as pain relief in the emotional sense - except is not relief... is just temporary not caring followed by chemical induced serious bum-out... and that makes people want to take it again, even if they don't need it to treat nociception.
In comparison, morphine is excellent for treatment of nociception - the actual pain signalling, pathwways and mechanisms of the body. People mistakenly assume that if you take it, you automatically get high, but if you do, it means you are over-medicating. A body will use what it needs to in order to block nociception, but if there is much more than is necessary to do that, the body perceives it as toxin, same as say, alcohol, and the physiological response is to feel high, just as with alcohol... this is effects of too much central nervous system (CNS) depression, as well as the body's vestigeal reaction to "toxicity" - which is to become dizzy by having the 'toxin' effect the inner ear and so balance, and when there is enough toxin, making person unswallow it... is useful left-over from our time as hunter gatherers when the only way to get rid of bad berries or meat was to unswallow it... also the reason that if one in the commune pukes, often, many will puke for no apparent reason other than fellow party-member did... in hunter-gatherer groups where foods were shared, if one at bad food, chances are all did, and so there is vestigeal response to trigger group unswallowing... But I digress...
Morphine, because body uses it more effectively than Oxys, and with less emotional aftermath (may be partly because orally dosed morphine is actually less bioavailable than Oxys are), is not only much better pain medication, but also when used reponsibly by those with acute or chronic pain, much less addictive. When discussing "dependance", often professionals are referring not to physical dependance as understood by addiction, but dependance in the same sense that diabetic is dependant on insulin to function.
So.. is trick question Red... How many pills a day is meaningless - what pills... what strength... and why... I have never taken 70 pain pills in one day, but then I have never taken them to become 'altered' or more 'happy'... I have only ever taken them to be able to... say... walk... or sometimes sit... or sometimes even lie down without screaming... but generally I am a happy person...

and insofar as I am happy because of pills, is only because they make me not experience nociception. When it comes to emotional 'stuff'... good or bad... happy or sad... would much rather experience it and either enjoy it or deal with it... I have enough problems already without becoming junky too.
So no... I do not think she was sister... she was chasing high... I am chasing life and self-sufficiency and functionality... I like working brain... she wanted to shut hers off, and seemingly succeeded. As discussed in this thread, she had many problems - some thrust upon her and others of her own, if not creation, than acceptance... I have many problems because of health problems but other problems - life problems and emotional problems are better solved by running toward them and addressing them realistically, rather than running away from them by addressing them chemically... and ultimately, this sister would rather experience pain than not, because over time, habit of not experiencing pain has a bad tendency to turn into permanent inability to feel pain... Maybe if she had had a sister with a better understanding of her pills, she would still be capable of having a sister, so to speak... Is very sad...
So... sorry to go on at such length, but is important, I believe.

It is well in hand. As professional, is not... elegant... solution to simply spray everything down with bleach, metaphorically speaking... has tendency to ruin upholstery. Why use harsh chemical when something subtle and artful is more effective and has potential to create future relationship wherin the Party is owed a little favour here or there... So... there are some witnesses still alive, but quite happy at craps table with comped drinks... Meanwhile, Greta is enjoying nice evening in the spa with Esteban - a lovely Cuban transplant to Florida who has found fulfillment as Cabana Boy "slash" walking Latin Love Pump... Greta is wearing that cute crooked smile of hers... and... hang on... I check... not much else... except Esteban...
And I have been in close contact with The Chairman in case I must call on his very particular skill set. All is in hand, and the rest is compost, soon to fertilize the Revolution. Spring is coming and I think the garden will be beautiful this year! And it is so much more enjoyable to rely on subtlety and artfulness and find oneself left with a full root cellar, than to simply salt the earth to rid ourselves of a few annoyances. That these annoyances then become assets to us in the future, to use as we see fit... to crush under our thumbs, to move as one would chess pieces to win glory for the People, or simply to kill in the future if I happen to wake up one day, look in the mirror and decide that my zippery little dolphin smile would be make wider by catching and gutting, rather than catching and releasing... Well... I can't help it if I love my work (and this spiffy new metal mallet I cadged off that flaky Nowak astroloony... she had good taste in tools... rubber tubing indeed... nice to see the old ways being respected...
Hmmm... ... sorry... am in good mood for some reason today... has made me expansive...

I like this very much... I think I will see if Aki is willing to stitch it on a sampler for me... or even a little throw pillow... I know... is slightly bourgeoise, but until braces come off is still shy about crooked zipper smile and so is taking time while teeth straighten to strenthen homemaking skills as he has already earned highest marks in sniper training... Pod's edukation must be kept balanced for the good of the Party. A well-rounded dolphin can only be of benefit to the Revolution.
Spakoyiny noche... is as close as I can get transliterating... though in Serbian they would say Laku noche... Sweet night comrade.
