Think On These Things
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be as the Framers and to have the responsibility of forming a new, and hopefully better, government? One of the first things you'd have to ask is something that's never even considered today. What is the source of the power of a just government? The men of our revolutionary time considered this a question of vital importance. They said: the consent of governed is the source of just government.
What is the consent of the governed? What can you consent to? Is consent whatever you agree to?
What can you agree to?
Can you agree with others to rob your neighbor? You can certainly all consent to rob your neighbor. You can all consent to murder for that matter.
Is agreeing to something what the framers of the constitution meant by "the consent of the governed."
I say no.
What you can consent to is what you have a Right to consent to. You can delegate a Right. You can consent to delegate that which is a Right.
This is what "the consent of the governed" means.
It does not mean whatever you agree to let the government do. It doesn't mean whatever is voted on in your name.
The consent of the governed is based on your individual rights, your Natural Rights.
When you understand this you can never be fooled by Statists. They will never accept this way of seeing "the consent of the governed" and will insist that it means what the majority consents to democratically.
But when that fails and a majority doesn't vote their way they revert to form. They are Statists and really don't care what the just power of the government is. They simply want what they want and they want it now.
So when democracy fails they invoke a new source of the just power of the government and that is always some variant of The Divine Right of Kings.
There is no other justification. And they are, in their eyes, better. They were born to ride humanity booted and spurred. The present day Statists see it that way completely, do not be mistaken.
And this is why it so important to hold in your mind where the just power of government is derived. Else you will end up praying to your earthly master for his goodness and kindness because he has become the center of and commander of your life. You become dependent as children. You lose the possession of your very life.
The entire purpose of a government based on the consent of the governed, Natural Rights codified, is so that we can all have possession of our own lives. Without this rock solid base freedom collapses because a government that derives it's just powers by anything other than what you have a right to consent to, when government derives it's just power from majority rule or some variant of the divine right of kings, the laws of the land takes on a different purpose and character than the preservation of freedom and liberty.
That preservation is what you can consent to.
"The consent of the governed" is what makes a limited government limited, it does not expand it to majority rule.
When you lose sight of that you lose everything.
