Colonel O, your post reminded 'pelipsky of an old gulag prison work camp joke.
A new recruit, freshly arrived with warm coat and shovel was assigned to a collective prison barrack. After a hard day's labor, the new recruit finally was able to lay down to slumber in the bunk shared with two other prisoners. After lights out, the more established prisoners began to call out numbers, and the prisoners would laugh. "What is so funny about numbers?", the new prisoner asked. "We've told the same jokes so long, we just gave them numbers", was the answer from one of the other prisoners in his bunk. The next night, the new prisoner was exhausted, but eager to join in the evening prison camp fun. He calls out, "42". No laughter from the experienced prisoners. "What's the deal? Why no laughter?", the new recruit asks. The longest serving gulag prisoner in the barrack answers, "Don't get your feelings hurt, new recruit. Some comrades can tell a joke, and some comrades can't."
