New York, NY — Following his Spanish-language video explaining what illegal immigrants should know when encountering ICE, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that it is actually the first of a new public-service campaign to help New Yorkers navigate interactions with law enforcement. The second episode, “So You've Just Committed Homicide,” will explain constitutional rights, access to attorneys, and the importance of understanding your legal options.
Future episodes will include “Detectives at Your Door: What You Need to Know,” and “Your Rights When Investigators Find Something Interesting in Your Basement.” City Hall insists the series will focus on legal education, not helping criminals conceal evidence or evade arrest. Those topics, officials clarified, are outside the scope of the free, publicly available curriculum.
Critics questioned whether taxpayer-funded educational videos should cater to criminals trying to avoid legal repercussions for their actions. Mamdani dismissed the criticism, explaining that constitutional rights apply to everyone, regardless of their circumstances. “Whether you're an undocumented immigrant answering the door or a career criminal answering questions about dismembered bodies, everyone deserves access to accurate information,” he reportedly explained.
The mayor's office is also considering a multilingual hotline offering referrals to attorneys specializing in situations involving missing persons, no alibi, and inconvenient forensic evidence.
Mamdani concluded by reaffirming his administration's commitment to public safety and equal treatment under the law. “Whatever your circumstances, you are not alone. If you find yourself in a difficult situation, seek qualified legal counsel.” He paused, then added, “And stay tuned for our next episode: ‘The Police Found the Shovel—Now What?’”
