WASHINGTON, D.C. — Following news that Senator Chris Murphy suffered a stroke this weekend, Americans are concerned and wishing him well. But Washington insiders are also quietly wondering whether Murphy might experience the same unexpected political transformation as Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman.
Since his 2022 stroke, Fetterman has increasingly broken with progressive Democrats on issues like Israel, immigration, and border security. His political evolution has been so surprising that some Democrats suspect his brain was accidentally rebooted with 'commonsense patriotism' firmware instead of the 'lockstep D' version they were expecting.
A stroke is of course not a desirable path to political enlightenment. But could Murphy's recovery include the sudden realization that border security isn't racist, government spending has limits, and people aren't fascist just for voting Republican?
For now, the world wishes Senator Murphy a full and speedy recovery. Whether that recovery includes a newfound appreciation for limited government, common sense, and the occasional Republican policy proposal remains to be seen. And who knows? Medical science has accomplished some remarkable things. Perhaps someday it will even find a cure for progressive brainrot.
