Am I a New York Russian creeped out by Democrats?

User avatar
I have been receiving a lot of emails and Facebook inquiries lately regarding a recent article about ex-Soviet immigrants in New York siding with Republicans because Democrats remind them too much of the Communist Party they had known in the Motherland.

It appears that this news has been spreading like wildfire all over the Internet and talk radio because I have received links to a wide array of websites talking about it. And everyone wants to know what I think about it.

So I decided to make myself a bumper sticker to end all inquiries.

"Ask me if I'm one of those New York Russians creeped out by Democrats"

Now I'm wondering if I should post this sticker for sale at the People's Dry Goods.

Excellent idea, comrade. Do it. I can see big sales in your future!

Hmmm, far from ending all inquiries, this sticker would seem to invite them.

But yes, do add those to the Dry Goods store, I'm sure that sales of those should soon eclipse sales of coffee cups. At least with the Russian emigre community in NYC.

In the early 1990s, I was working at a place in NYC where there a number of ex-Soviet citizens. One day, I repeated to one a joke I heard about the difference between the US and the USSR, that in the USSR you could tell your boss to go to hell but not the government and in the US, it was exactly the opposite. He told me in no uncertain terms that was bullshit. Nobody hated communism more than those guys.

Y, there is/was an ad campaign for some multi-level marketing thing built around bumper stickers that read something like "I'm Losing Weight Right Now, Ask Me How!" Maybe a good knock-off would be "Socialism Sucks - Ask Me Why!"

I like it!

Let's see if it sells any shirts.

Comrade Opiate, the error in your joke was that, in the Soviet Union, the boss was the government.

User avatar
I will buy one of those stickers for my GM Volt and hope there's room for it on the itty bitty plastic bumper.

Demo's are creepy? Well, that explains a lot.

Those of us non-Russians who grew up under the influence of the Soviets during the Cold War, are now scared too.

If ex-Soviet Russians and former Soviet tools are scared, then it is not an issue of mere paranoia, or psychosis.

User avatar
Can I get a bumber sticker that says "Friends of creeped out New York Russians"

User avatar
Rikalonius - that was funny. But seriously, if you go to that sticker on Zazzle and click "customize" you can change the image, text, font, color, background, or anything else for that matter.

What we can't change, I'm afraid, is that sucking sound coming out of Washington - not until 2012.

Nyeahhh....I don't think so Doc. T-Shirts, yeah...but a bumper sticker is vitriol that might cause a peaceful prog to go ballistic on yer windshield and maybe put a few dents in your car too. Remember, non-violence is perfect when everybody is looking. Turn yer back and the peaceful prog ain't so peaceful.

That, and the fact that if a US citizen tells his boss to go to hell, the worst that would happen was he would be fired (and it's getting harder to do that thanks to the ADA and a surplus of lawyers.) If the Soviet citizen told the government to go to hell, the worst that could happen was he would be fired at by the dispute arbitration commission (we know it as a Firing Squad.)

Right. And if caught, they would blame it on the "inflammatory rhetoric" emanating from your car's bumper.

I have been assured by the local progressive community, that when former residents of the former USSR denounce the Democrats that I don't know what I'm talking about, that they are a fringe group, and generally that the whole thing is a lie spread by talk radio.

User avatar
Colonel, these Russians are just like those Cuban malcontents down in Florida. When Tuesday dawns they'll be the first ones marched into the gulag.

User avatar
I wonder if we could set up a special corporation to handle management of these gulags and reeducation camps? Call it ProgressiveCare Rehabilitation and Retraining centers or something.

State Sen. Diane Savino (D-North Shore/Brooklyn) said she understands the Russian aversion to anything that looks like big government, but thinks the criticism of the Democratic Party is off-base.

"You can't ignore the fact that the Russian population here came of age during the Soviet era," said Ms. Savino, who counts many Russians among her Brooklyn constituents.

"They have different thoughts on what communism and socialism mean. They are a little more sensitive to it.

"But, that being said," she added, "you can't compare the policies of the Democratic Party with communism. It's absurd."
In other words, Red Square, the problem isn't that the Democrats are anything like what you left behind in the Motherland. No, siree—the problem is YOU!*

You're absurd, off-base, and just too sensitive for your own good, when it's the greater good that counts. Yes, you are so sensitive and touchy that you think you see Communism in every little thing the Democrats do.

Plus, you came of age during the Soviet era, which means you're just another old codger who's out of touch because you're stuck in the past, and you can't keep up with the latest trends so you can't see how everything has improved, changed for the better; you simply can't see and appreciate the glorious PROGRESS that's been made!

Comrade Savino says that her Russian constituents have “different thoughts.” Just last week, Obama said something in his Tucson speech about blaming those who think differently.

Well, just as the definition of “civility” has changed from “politeness” to “all conservatives STFU”, in this new era of civil discourse and toned down rhetoric (which also means “all conservatives STFU”), “different” as it applies to thought means WRONG!

Instead of trying to compare the policies of the Democratic Party with Communism—which is an utterly futile exercise—let us instead have a civil discourse on comparing the policies of the Republican Party with Nazi fascism.

*That, and maybe the Democrats need to work some more on their messaging and stop letting the Right hijack the debate—which should be over by now.

Of course, we know that's true. And the reason we must depend on our Democrat friends to fix the problem - Rush Limbaugh, Hannity, Fox News all need to be monitored (i.e. controlled) by our caring, nanny government Democrats. We can't continue to allow their version of the truth, to be spread to unsuspecting, opened minded "little people" in flyover country, when the truth is must better interpreted by the liberals at ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC, CNN and NPR.
The problem is obviously, Red Square, who didn't know how good he had it in the USSR. Yes, that's the answer. We must continue to repeat that until it's well embedded in our "little" minds.

' Democrats are good; Republicans are bad. Democrats are smart; Republicans are stupid. Obama is great; Bush was Hitler.'

User avatar
I think we should go ahead and market the "creeped out by Dems" bumper stickers, t-shirts, coffee mugs, etc. The tax revenues could then go to subsidize "Ask me if I'm a Manhattan socialite creeped out by the TEA Party" bumper stickers, t-shirts, coffee mugs, etc. to ensure equality.

User avatar
Komissar Blogunov - first we need to lobby Congress to pass the Fairness in Bumper Sticker doctrine, so that for every right-wing bumper sticker a car owner would have to attach an equally-sized left-wing bumper sticker. This rule, of course. shouldn't apply to those who already display left-wing bumper stickers - they are in compliance.

One might position the left-wing stickers on the left side of the bumper and the right-wing stickers on the right side.

However, in the spirit of the latest Democrat proposal to redistribute the Dem and GOP congresspeople equally throughout the auditorium during the State of the Union address, it might also be a good idea to ensure that the bumper stickers are equally scattered around the entire car body, to avoid any suspicion of a bias.

User avatar
And cars with religious bumper stickers can be seen on public roads - a clear violation of the constitutionally enshrined and mandated elimination of the church by the state. Therefore, the Fairness in Bumper Sticker doctrine must include heavy fines and jail terms for offenders who promote non-approved religious views.
