A science editor at BuzzFeed UK raised a few eyebrows last week after some curious remarks about Communism. Kelly Oakes tweeted "All I Want For Christmas Is Full Communism Now."

Since this glorious tweet, Kelly Oakes has locked down her Twitter account after it was picked by right-wingers in the media and in Hollywood.

BuzzFeed refused to comment. However, Oakes, does not report to Buzzfeeds U.S.-based science desk, and also did not respond for a comment request.

And right now I transmit to Дед Мороз, Reds' Santa Claus, to give you special care, in Kolyma!

Comrades!
I am again 'losing my lunch', it is amazing how history repeats itself over and over. I hope we skip the 20th Century for a redo but it may be inevitable.

In Glorious Socialist Comradely!
Your faithful Liquidator!

Is her picture in the Socialist Dictionary next to the term "Useful Idiot"? If not, why not?

Well, this is easily arranged. How much is a flight to Pyongyang? How about a gofundme?

Would the image of her in the NKVD hat be lost on her, or would she think it's just totally cool?

The NKVD hat is a fashion choice. It goes so well with her blue sweater and her red lipstick is an exact match for the headband. Would be a shame if some sexist judged her for it. Oops, already happened...

Comrade! I too have committed such crimes but, since you are a good communist, we will forgive you, for now. Maybe? Depends on next Party Congress, the truth never stays the same Comrade.

I'm sure that a helicopter ride can be arranged for her to "drop her in" to the Communist Hell-hole of her choice. Just sayin'

One of my students was telling me today that Дед Мороз became associated with the new year rather than Christmas as part of the communist campaign for secularism. Any thoughts on that?

I think we need a new father Marxmas: if the children behave, they get to keep their food and toys. But if they misbehave, father Marxmas will come and take away all their posessions, and maybe shoot the parents. Now THAT would teach them a lesson.

Indeed. And to keep the peasants in line make things more interesting, we will change the rules intermittently about what is good behavior and what is bad behavior.

Yep. And some parameters:

  • Дед Мороз (Grandpa Frost, and his helper Снегурочка, Snow (kiddie-)Maiden) are very "Russian", not generally "Slavian".
  • Yet, Дед Мороз isn't a purely Soviet concoction - originated in Russia's mid 19th century, via storybooks.
  • Yep, Дед Мороз was heavily instrumentalized by Soviet Commies, since the very begin of their Paradise, to suppress and derail religious (here: Russian Orthodox Church) roots and traditions.
  • The Soviets switched (in 1918) from Julian to Gregorian calendar - one of side effects being the "jump" of the October (25th) Revolution to November (7th).
Another effect: all things associated with (old) Christmas were pushed into the "vicinity" of (now) New Year. And so Дед Мороз, in Santa Claus attire, slid to somewhere between New Year's Eve and Epiphany (Three Kings Day). Снегурочка was "declared" the granddaughter of Дед Мороз, Christmas tree a symbol of "Year Change", etc.
  • Next, soon after the end of WW2, suppression of religiosity (and its institutions, the Churches, and its traditions) started in all newly "acquired" Soviet satellites. Here, Poland - with its strong Catholic foundation - became "client #1".
  • That anti-religious pressure in the Eastern Block (and even in Soviet Russia itself) was only somewhat eased after the upheavals of '56 (start of de-Stalinization - Khrushchev's ottyepyel', thaw - and the tragic 1956 uprisings in Poland and Hungary).

And then, that New-Year-Дед-Мороз began to fade in Soviet's outer orbit.

Fascinating. Thanks, for the most equal response.

Our German brethren in the Great Struggle have Krampus. That's pretty close.

So that's where all the toys come from! What a relief to know that Дед Мороз doesn't use oppressed minority elf wage-slave laborers.

It's thoughtful of Comrade Lenin to take care of The Childrentm while their parents are in gulag vacationing - don't you think?

Amusing, how adding that Cheka accessory
