Russian police arrest dozens at opposition protests
Oct 31 03:33 PM US/Eastern

Russian police arrested dozens of opposition activists at unauthorised human rights rallies denouncing Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in Moscow and Saint Petersburg on Sunday.

In Triumfalnaya Square in the capital, several hundred people gathered for a regular rally aimed at highlighting Article 31 of the constitution, which guarantees freedom of assembly, with some holding placards criticising Putin.

A total of 27 activists were arrested for taking part in the unauthorised rally, a police spokesman was quoted as saying by Interfax news agency.

The rally was held in the same square as a rare authorised protest by human rights groups, and activists forced police to remove barriers and metal detectors to allow the groups to meet.

"This demonstration is our shared success," said Ludmila Alexeyeva, the veteran head of the Moscow branch of the Helsinki Group, a human rights group involved in organising the authorised demonstration.

"In Russia, as in the Soviet Union, authorities do not respect constitutional rights," she said.

Boris Nemtsov, a former deputy prime minister and liberal opposition politician, said that demonstrators would march to the Kremlin in the next "Strategy 31" march in December.

In the centre of the country's second city Saint Petersburg meanwhile, police arrested about 60 people as around 300 protesters gathered, brandishing copies of the country's constitution.

Russia's small but vocal opposition stages regular protests, chiefly in Moscow, which rarely receive official authorisation and often result in police rounding up demonstrators.

The True Progressive understands that rules can be broken at any time by those governing the masses. I really don't see what these protesters are unhappy about.......

Do they really expect Moscow to honor its own constitution by allowing those opposing
Putin and his policies to demonstrate their point of view in public ?

Come on people, time to sit up against the wall and take another swig of vodka....

This is the old Soviet sense of repressive State control attempting a comeback.

Once again, there will be no opposition without official permission.

Vy poni'maete, tovarish ?

Comrades,

Where to these comrades think they are? Times Square? Trafalgar Square?

The next assembly will be time to practice crowd control with Loud Speakers, followed by the application of automatic weapons!

Comrades, I find this display appalling as well but thought it most unequal that some of the dissidents were without hair, so with the liberal application of Ace Ventura hair, said dissident reminded me of a young Mickey Rourke ala Barfly.

That said, hopefully he was eliminated for his transgression.

Well, DUH and double DUH DUH. When will the masses ever understand? Constitutional Rights are way above the thought levels of the average Prole. Sheesh! They need us, their intellectual superiors to explain and ration Rights. Russia? The USSA? It's all the same. The poor creatures just don't understand.

Buffoon, you were stoned again. That wasn't the movie "Barfly" you were watching on TV, you were just staring into the mirror.

btw: you really do look like Mickey Rourke.

I'm sure the beloved Motherland will quell this teabagger uprising most swiftly.

Damn! You're right, I was the one looking in the mirror.

(nevermind)

Comrade Whoopie!

Thank you for narcing out the perpetrators this valuable information. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Even now our beloved MSM is sending their anti-tea-bagging specialists like socialist Larry O'Donnell and other talking heads including Bill Maher, Ed Schultz, Rachel Maddow and have re-suspended Keith Olbermann so he could go too. They will go on Soviet TV to ridicule, denigrate and villify these tea-bagging upstarts!

Why in tar-nation are they arresting them? I thought the first sign of opposition was to "remove" it from the equation.
