Apologies for showing up late to this thread - honestly, the whole thing has been too depressing to discuss.
I saw the White House meeting as masterclass in mutual misjudgment, where everyone managed to lose. It was a comedy of errors minus the comedy. The only winners here are Putin and the Democrats. Unless, of course, the whole spectacle was some 4D chess move to make Putin trust Trump. I know it's a stretch, but not entirely impossible. If that’s the case, well, maybe there’s a sliver of a silver lining.
Meanwhile, the diplomatic corps in Ukraine is about as useful as a chocolate éclair in a bowl of borsht. Instead of doing their jobs, they snuggled up to the Dems and let the Trump team wade into a swamp of Russian lobbyists, unchecked. That’s on them. They also didn’t bother properly briefing Zel or handling a million other obvious tasks. And then there’s Oxana Markarova, Ukraine’s ambassador to the U.S.—practically a Democratic Party operative at this point, shaping U.S.-Ukraine relations like it's her personal pet project. Let’s not even get into where all that USAID money has been going. This has been a parade of follies, minus the fun costumes.
Speaking of costumes, I myself used to call suits “costumes” because that’s the word for them in the old country. That’s what’s known as a "false friend of interpreter." I eventually learned to say “suit,” but Zel clearly hasn’t. He thought his English was up to the task, but it wasn’t. He struggled to express himself, missed cultural nuances, and sometimes flat-out didn’t understand what was being said. I've been there myself, it's stressful as hell. Add jet lag and the weight of leading a country at war, and you’ve got a disaster of a conversation.
Zel should’ve brought an interpreter. That would’ve bought him time to formulate his points better and smoothed out the inevitable awkward moments. Again, that failure falls on his diplomatic team.
Then there’s the bad move of meeting with the Dems before stepping into the White House (again, obviously arranged for him by ambassador Markarova). They filled his head with bad advice, and instead of just signing a pre-arranged deal, he derailed things with talk of security guarantees. He basically put the cart before the horse, since typically, it’s the recipient of investments who offers guarantees, not the other way around. The fact that Trump even floated the minerals deal suggests he’s looking for a way to help and to end the fighting, since most of those resources are in the war zone.
Zel also shouldn’t have tried to corner Trump into declaring loyalty and denouncing Putin. Trump’s playing the “neutral mediator” card is his whole shtick, and so pushing him on that was yet another blunder in this festival of missteps.
Vance also shouldn't have acted like an arrogant bully. That was inappropriate, no matter what. And here we arrive to the false claim mentioned on this thread, that Zel cursed at Vance. That seems like an invention of a Russian propagandist designed to turn the tables and describe Zel as the one acting inappropriately. Zel did open his mouth, but I tried my hardest to make out what he said – and I couldn't make out the words, especially that his lip movements didn't match the alleged phrase. So "hearing" that specific insult seems more like wishful thinking from someone with an agenda.
A friends had asked me about this issue, referring to a viral tweet to that effect. I gave him this response, which I later tweeted as a comment. My response also went viral, bringing in a swarm of negative replies from the usual crowd. Because, of course, that’s how this works.
As someone who speaks both Russian and Ukrainian, let me clarify:
1. The video doesn’t clearly capture what Zel said. It could be anything, but if someone wants to interpret it as a curse, they will.
2. Even if he did say it, the phrase in question is more of an exasperated exclamation, like "Oh, f* me."** It would only be an insult if said directly to someone’s face, not muttered under one’s breath. Just like the English F-word, context and delivery matter.
3. The phrase exists in both languages and is pronounced exactly the same way. With just two words, you wouldn’t even know whether it was in Ukrainian or Russian.
What adds to my disappointment is seeing so many people on our side - who pride themselves on being independent thinkers and mock the other side as "sheeple" - suddenly start thinking like a herd themselves. Mindlessly repeating talking points that sound bold and radical but really aren’t, is not exactly the intellectual rebellion they imagine.
Since that tweet went viral, I’ve received a few supportive responses. Оne of them was a DM from Oliver Anthony, the singer-songwriter behind "Rich Men North of Richmond" fame, who expressed his support for Ukraine and its people.

Comrades, I hate to say it but this is the last day of Two-Minute Hate™ for March 2025. Perhaps there will be one for April 2025. That remains to be seen. Otherwise...
I hate that so-called Islamic organizations (some with ties to Islamoterrorists) are piling on Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth over a tattoo on his right arm. It's written in Arabic and says "kafir," which translates as "unbeliever" (infidel).
Islamists are calling it "Islamophobic" and a statement that U.S. foreign policy is a crusade against Muslims. Meh.
Whatever the tattoo is, it's completely constitutional according to the 1st Amendment:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of
religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or
abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the
right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition
the government for a redress of grievances.
1. Hegseth is not Congress.
2. Hegseth is making no law respecting an establishment of religion.
3. Hegseth is not prohibiting the free exercise of religion.
4. Hegseth is exercising his freedom of speech.
That last one (#4) is most important because—sorry Islamist agitators—the 1st Amendment both upholds the free exercise of religion AND the freedom to say anything we want about any religion, tasteless or blasphemous included.
Obviously Hegseth's other tattoos express that he's on the Judeo-Christianity team. The kafir expresses that he's not on the Islamic team. His tattoos are neither Islamophobic nor a foreign policy statement—they're statements of personal faith allegiance and non-allegiance.
Like it or not, in the USSA, everyone can exercise freedom of religion but no one is compelled to show reverence to any religion, and even free to wear a tattoo like this:
