In Charles Laughton’s sole directorial masterpiece — The Night of the Hunter — one of the most visually stunning and chilling Southern Gothic thrillers ever made, the Rev. Harry Powell preys on trusting widows, slits their throats, and steals their money and cars, all in the name of “God’s work.” Jackalopelipsky in conducting research for TPC SUBWH final report, streamed, The Night of the Hunter, again. Everything said about this film is true, comrades.

Laughton’s expressionistic cinematography, dreamlike nightscapes, and masterful use of light and shadow create a fairy-tale nightmare of breathtaking beauty and profound dread. After hearing a dying cellmate boast of hidden robbery money, Powell’s relentless hunt for two innocent children carrying the fortune in a doll becomes unbearably tense — a perfect blend of terror, tenderness, and moral horror.

When the Rev. James Talarico speaks about God, Jesus, and how he plans to legislate those “values,” the southern gothic, love:hate, that puts innocent children in peril chill returns. Behind the disarming smile and youthful face lurks a modern Rev. Powell — a man who views mixed-up middle schoolers not as souls to protect, but as vessels for his ideology and grant-funded social experiments.

Yes! Comrade Jackalope! I'm glad you brought it to the attention of TPC. An excellent film noir with the best performance of Robert Mitchum's career. I would only quibble with "fairytale." It is like a quiet but menacing nightmare that gets you where you live, but not so "fairytale" unfortunately these days and in broad daylight. It is no longer fiction. The female heroine doesn't have big breasts and spike heels, either.
