Write to Columbia University, demand: no reprisals!

On Wednesday night, October 4, progressive students at Columbia University protested the racist Minuteman Project inside and outside the auditorium where they were speaking. Although the students were subject to vicious and violent attacks by Minutemen stormtroopers, they held their ground and Jim Gilchrist, the Minutemen founder, terminated his speech. Now the university is threatening to punish the anti-racist students. It is urgent that you take action now to show your support.

The ANSWER Coalition has set up an easy-to-use mechanism to send a letter to Columbia University President Lee Bollinger in support of student protesters who are being threatened with reprisals following their protest against Jim Gilchrist, founder of the racist anti-immigrant vigilante organization, the Minuteman Project. The protesters went on stage with banners that said, "No One is Illegal" and "Say No to Racism." The protesters were physically assaulted by Minutemen and their supporters.

...Gilchrist turned reality on its head, claiming to be the one maligned by the students. In a statement on the Minuteman Project Web site he called the protesters “hateful elites who prove themselves to be the real bigots.” His comments appear under the headline “Students: Darky, Keep Thy Place!” One doesn't need a clearer sign to see who is the racist here.

One of the protesters, Sharon Black, a volunteer for the New York May 1st Coalition for Immigrant Rights, was quoted in the Los Angeles Times as saying Gilchrist was not welcome in New York City. “We are a city of immigrants. His message is one of division, racism and hate,” she said.

The May 1st Coalition sent a message of solidarity to the students and has proposed they speak at an upcoming Oct. 21 rally for immigrant rights at Union Square.

THE EVENTS at Columbia University on Oct. 4, in which about a dozen students stormed a stage where the founder of an anti-illegal immigration group was speaking, didn't exactly resemble those of April 1968. There were no arrests, no soundtrack by the Grateful Dead, no occupation of the president's office. But considering that most young people are considered to be politically apathetic, you have to credit the Chicano Caucus and the International Socialist Organization for trying.

The speaker, Jim Gilchrist of the Minuteman Project, a citizen's border patrol group, had been invited to campus by the Columbia University College Republicans. Reports in the New York Times said students holding banners reading "No One Is Illegal" jumped on the stage and were soon joined by dozens more protesters as well as supporters of Gilchrist. Protesters later said Gilchrist was knocked backward and his glasses were broken. The student newspaper, the Columbia Spectator, reported that "one student was kicked in the head and bleeding."

Whoa comrade, that's not the same prime example of good Proletarian stock as we saw in the first photo (note the obvious additional amount of Proletarian boobage). You are obviously a servant of The People, comrade Pravda... at least of the young, blonde, cute female People!
