There was actually a diarrhea gas that the military developed to combat protesting hippies during the 60's. Unfortunately it was banned after the first use... I don't see why.

I believe it was banned because it had a backwards effect - the diarrhea gas (and related debris) actually was ejected laterally, from the mouth, in the form of vile rants. And after 40 years the hippies have never been able to gain control over their polluted, potty mouths and foul opinions. It's very sad actually.

What makes me think that your point of view is different from mine? Your exhibit, your description of it, and your blog. The difference between us is that you think the problems between our countries are America's fault and that America must change its attitude, while I think that America is just fine - and that it's Iran that must change. You blame "current political climate in the US." Are you kidding me? What about the current political climate in the Islamic Republic of Iran, where the Mullahs are instilling a medieval rule that stifles the very liberties and the enjoyment of life you claim to celebrate.

Willingly or unwillingly, you are performing the same bait-and-switch trick that the Soviet propagandists used to do, showing smiling peaceful people as the face of the country, while the problem was not with the people but with the unelected totalitarian regime that threatened the world.

The situation in Iran today reminds me that in the USSR in the 1980s, when the majority of people hated the regime and would love to change it. Most Iranians would welcome America's help in getting rid of the Mullahs. Your pretense that this is not happening and that Iranian culture is fine the way it is now is an insult to all those freedom-loving Iranians who are being tortured in Iranian prisons because they wanted more liberty than the Mullahs would allow.

So objectively, you come off either as a willing accomplice of the Mullahs that oppress the Iranian people, or as a clueless tool of the Islamic Republic's propaganda.

How do I know all this? You're not the only one who has Iranian friends. Have you considered why so many educated Iranians have left their native country after the Islamic Revolution in 1979 and now live in the West, including America? America gave them what they had been robbed of at home - and you dare accuse America of anti-Iranian sentiment?

I work very closely with a psychologist from Iran and we talk a bit about this, but I have been very gradual about feeling out her views, I know she is proud of the rich historical culture of Iran, but I have also felt her revulsion for the ones trying to bring Iran back to the 15th century. She visited her family just this past year, so she has seen her home recently. I have certainly not heard her disparage the US in any way, but I have heard her disgust with her father, which seemed to translate to the male culture there as well. Her mother died not long back, and as she said, it was as if nothing to her father, who apparently married another wife promptly. She also talks about the huge divide in the population between the educated Iranians and the fundamentalists.

Do you support a free and secular Iran or the current Islamic Republic?

As long as the government in Iran stands firmly opposed to enlightenment and rationalism, the bedrock of western thought, the Party must support them!

UPDATE FROM OUR FRIENDS IN DENVER:

It's only 6-1/2 weeks now until the DNC. I've got an idea that we'll have pretty good attendance for the rally. I've also made a liason with a group holding a rally supporting the troops and their mission in Minneapolis at the RNC.

What's been posted so far on the "Make the DNC your pwn" is fun, but I don't think there's anything there that we can use. The message is better delivered if it's about issues and not parties, especially that Republicans haven't been meeting our expectations either lately. So instead of overtly anti-Obama messages we'd rather have imaginative anti-appeasement, anti-surrender, pro-victory, anti-stupid energy and other security-related policy signs. We are also trying to get the participation of groups who are legally obliged to stick to non-partisan activities. I might not even get to wear my Re-elect Jimmy Carter t-shirt with Obama's portrait on it.

Still, any really great signs I can still send to people who can produce them on their own: I'm not making promises about what others will say or do, only about the signs that I will provide directly. So don't let this kill your wonderful creative juices, it's just a heads-up that we can put the less out-there signs to good use!!
