A Union helps in bringing the masses out from under the thumb of the current Krapitalistic system allowing them to thrive as yet another cog in the well oiled machine of a communist system. As for The Party™ supporting unions and I believe you already know this; The Party™ supports Unions for many reasons, but chiefly among them is the ability to skim from the top of confiscated "dues" for political and personal gain.
