International Mercenaries or Volunteers?

I read an article yesterday about American volunteers (or mercenaries) fighting on both sides of the war in Ukraine. It isn't exactly unprecedented, as volunteers (or mercenaries) fighting for nations they're not citizens of has been going on for millennia, but then I spotted this symbol:

It was a eureka moment!  I think the same thing is going on right here in the good ol' USSA!
