Motorway lights to be switched off at night despite safety warnings


Motorway lighting is to be switched off in parts of Britain to reduce carbon emissions, despite warnings from police and scientists that the move would affect safety.

The Highways Agency confirmed it would go ahead with plans to turn off lighting on some stretches of motorway between midnight and 5am, and claimed the move would also reduce light pollution of the night sky....

...However the changes could have significant safety implications, according to the latest research published in the scientific journal, the Cochrane Library. It found that street lighting reduced the number of fatal crashes by 77 per cent and other collisions by between 32 and 55 per cent.

I would argue that the carbon savings of turning off motorway lights at night would be offset by the carbon dioxide given off by decomposing bodies of car crash victims lying in the ditch, but thats my opinion.....

Death reduces your carbon footprint to zero. Reducing the number of people who safely traverse the highway by 77% is like taking 100,000 cars off the road permanently. Think of the carbon savings they could accomplish by turning off traffic signals at night.

The article also mentioned turning off lights would "reduce light pollution of the night sky"

Imagine you missed a curve because the lights illuminating that stretch of road were turned off. You are ejected through the windshield and land on your back in the middle of the road. The first thing you notice is you no longer have any feeling in your legs. The second thing you notice is, you know, you've never seen the stars shine so bright this close to the city. If I could turn my head, you think, I could see the Big Dipper over there....
