The Left is Silent

Mounting death tolls was their friend
They'll ignore you once again
Because the total's increasing
Libs now sleeping weren't looking
And their intention was planted in distain
Still remains
Now all we hear is silence

In fresh dug graves they go alone
Narrow cuts of earth and stone
In hollows of earth's final camp
They are laid into the cold and damp
When their eyes were seered by the blood given in the fight
That split their night
But from the left... more silence

And then the total count they saw
Four thousand soldiers maybe more
Soldiers carried without speaking
Soldiers bearing not complaining
Soldiers written names tombstones only shared
One not dared
Break their code of silence

"Fools," said I, "you do not know
Silence shows your angry goals
Hear the words that might teach you
Take the arms that might reach you"
But the words like dying soldiers fell
And the empty ring of silence

And this people bowed and prayed
To the Kenyan god they made
And the news flashed out no story
Empty words it was reporting
And the news said "Names of the soldiers are written on graveyard walls
And memory's halls
And and from the left.......just silence

This version makes more sense than the original. I like it much better - and I'm being completely earnest.

It's very strange to listen to the 1960s protest rock today. After so much time has passed, and I have grown older, I realize just how immature the lyrics are. They sounded good at the time, but further reflection after all those years doesn't make them any clearer. In fact, it makes them less clear. I'm not sure if that is just the years talking or if I've somehow acquired enough wisdom to see how irrelevant their protesting really was. But then again, I suspect my sons think that Eminem is the Oracle of Wisdom.

Oh well...

It was the melodies and the emotional way the lyrics were delivered that made us think there was deep meaning there. The leftist message piggybacked its way into our consciousness because of it. Which is why we should hijack their melodies and put our own lyrics there

And not simply for a laugh. There are times when the song can be turned into something very poignant, as Groucho has done here, or rousing. I've tried to make this point before, not always with complete success
